Local Context
Chicago has also experienced some cases of bullying. According to CBS local media (2014): A former St. Charles East High School student is suing the district and several staffers, alleging she was bullied, hazed and harassed by members of her drill team and that coaches and district officials did nothing to stop it. This impacts our city because now the school is getting sued and it receives a bad reputation. This is one of the many stories that happen in our city, Chicago. According to the city of Chicago (2014): “There are about 160,000 children that miss school every day out of fear of being bullied. Nationwide surveys of 6th through 10th graders conducted by the national institute of Child Health and Human Development revealed that 17% of children in the 6th through 10th grade are bullied sometimes or weekly, while 19% bully others sometimes or weekly.” This means that in our city there are 160,000 students that don’t come to school because they don't feel protected. Bullying is a serious issue that still many students don’t find serious and still dare to bully others. Chicago though does have bullying prevention programs. Stopbullying.gov is one of the websites where you can recieve information on how to deal with bullying and create a better community according to the city of Chicago. Not only is there a website, but there are also conferences for anti-bullying. If you want to be part of these conferences you should visit http://www.antibullyingconference.com/chicago-2014/ to be informed.
